Simple Crochet Wall Hanging

A small fiber wall hanging introduces a handmade texture without covering an entire wall. This rectangular project combines rows of half double crochet with an uncomplicated fringe along the bottom. Use a natural cotton yarn and a narrow wooden dowel for a calm, modern piece suitable for a reading nook or craft room.

Materials & tools

  • Worsted cotton yarn, approximately 100–160 yards
  • 5 mm crochet hook and yarn needle
  • A smooth wooden dowel around 14 inches (35 cm) long, scissors, and hanging cord

Size & gauge

A panel approximately 12 inches wide is a reasonable target. An initial chain of 37 gives 36 half double crochet stitches; adjust according to a gauge swatch and the space available on your dowel. Height depends on the number of worked rows.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Chain 37 and half double crochet into the second chain and every chain across, giving 36 stitches.
  2. Chain 1, turn, and half double crochet across the next row. Continue for 22 rows, or until the panel has pleasing rectangular proportions.
  3. If you want a subtle stripe, change yarn color for rows 12–15, then return to the main shade.
  4. Work one row of single crochet across the top edge to make a stable hanging edge.
  5. Cut approximately 36 equal fringe strands and attach folded strands along the lower edge with lark’s-head knots, spacing them to avoid bulk.
  6. To mount the piece, stitch the top edge around a wooden dowel with a tapestry needle, securing the yarn securely at both ends.
  7. Tie a separate length of cord to the dowel ends for hanging and trim fringe to a consistent length.

Finishing & care

Hang the textile from a securely mounted hook appropriate to your wall. Keep this purely decorative piece away from a baby’s crib or any space where loose cords can be reached by a child or pet. Dust gently or wash the textile only after removing wooden pieces.

Helpful notes

Uneven fringe often makes an otherwise tidy wall hanging look unsettled. Measure the strands first, attach them loosely, then trim them together after the panel hangs straight. A slim dowel looks lighter than a thick branch and fits minimalist interiors. Avoid overly bulky yarn if you want the surface stitches to remain visible.

Make it your own

Add a short row of surface slip stitches in a contrasting neutral across the center or make the fringe graduated into a shallow V shape. If you need a larger hanging, add foundation chains and rows proportionally, checking the panel does not extend beyond the supporting dowel.
