Crochet Cushion Cover Pattern
A textured crochet cushion gives a plain sofa or reading chair a handmade focal point without filling the room with clutter. This approachable cover is created from two rectangles in half double crochet and joined around a removable pillow insert. Work with neutral yarn for a soft interior look and choose a washable fiber for daily use.
Materials & tools
- Worsted-weight cotton or cotton-blend yarn, approximately 500–650 yards for a small cover
- 5 mm hook, yarn needle, scissors, and removable markers
- A 12-inch (30 cm) cushion insert; optional buttons for a removable opening
Size & gauge
Target a finished cover near 12 x 12 inches (30 x 30 cm). A working gauge around 12 half double crochet stitches and 10 rows per 4 inches gives a starting point. Make a gauge swatch and measure the cover against the actual insert before joining.
Step-by-step instructions
- Chain 37. For the first row, half double crochet (hdc) in the second chain and each chain across for 36 hdc.
- Chain 1 and turn; work 36 hdc across. Repeat until your panel measures approximately 12 inches high.
- Work a second rectangle matching the first in stitch count and measured size. Check both pieces after gentle blocking.
- Place the panels with wrong sides together so the decorative faces point outward.
- Single crochet through both layers along the first three sides, working two or three sc at each corner as required to prevent bunching.
- Insert the cushion before closing the final side; for a washable cover, consider stitching one seam with removable ties or a buttoned overlap instead of closing it permanently.
- Fasten off and weave all yarn tails securely on the inside.
Finishing & care
Work the cover to the insert, not only to the advertised size. A panel that stretches considerably may need fewer rows or a smaller hook. You can lightly block the squares first, but allow them to dry fully before assembly. Keep buttons well secured, and avoid detached hardware on cushions used around small children.
Helpful notes
Half double crochet provides a gently ridged, almost woven surface that suits an understated living room. Make a swatch with your chosen yarn because cotton, acrylic, and blended fibers all drape differently. If your edges are slanted, count every row and keep your turning chain consistent. Consider a concealed fabric liner if the yarn gaps reveal too much of the insert.
Make it your own
Add three color-blocked rows near the bottom or work the back panel in a coordinating solid shade. A contrasting single crochet join can outline the shape. If you prefer a larger pillow, calculate the number of stitches by multiplying the desired width by your stitches-per-inch measurement.
